CaFÉ Jury Types: A Quick Guide

Understanding the two jury types in CaFÉ is crucial for managing your call effectively. Use this guide to help you choose the best option for your needs!

What is a Jury Type?

In CaFÉ, there are two jury types that will determine how the system handles the applications for your call: Scoring by Art and Scoring by Application.

When you add a call to CaFÉ, you will choose the jury type that best aligns with your application management and scoring.

⚠️ Note: The jury type cannot be changed after your call opens.

What's the Difference? 🧐

The core distinction lies in whether you're selecting single artworks or individual artists.

Scoring by Art 🖼️

Scoring by Application 🧑‍🎨

Primary Goal

Selecting single pieces of art.

Selecting individual artists (based on their body of work).

Application Grouping

Each image, video, or audio file is a separate application.

All images, videos, and audio files are grouped into one application.

Review Method

Applications are reviewed individually, and the juror assigns one score to every piece of art.

Applications are reviewed like a portfolio, and the juror assigns one score to the entire body of work.

Example

5 images = 5 applications

5 images = 1 application

Scoring by Application also enables you to review pieces of art where more than one work sample is required. For example, a sculpture exhibition may need multiple views of the artwork to convey it properly. In this case, use Scoring by Application to group the images together into one application.

When to Use Each Jury Type 🎯

Below are some common scenarios to help you decide.

Choose Scoring by Art if you are...

  • Curating art for a gallery show.

  • Choosing artwork for an auction.

  • Judging art for an exhibition.

  • Awarding prizes to the best in show.

  • Picking art for a poster competition.

  • Featuring artwork in a publication.

Choose Scoring by Application if you are...

  • Qualifying artists for a public art project.

  • Issuing grants to artists.

  • Recruiting artists for a residency.

  • Evaluating photography portfolios.

  • Selecting artists for a roster.

  • Curating a sculpture walk.

    • 💡 Note: This is ideal when more than one work sample is required to properly view a single piece of art (e.g., multiple angles of a sculpture).
